$1.4 Million Jury Verdict in Breach of Non-Compete and Slander Case

SLS attorneys Jim Myers and Dawn Parsons represented an employer in a business dispute with a former employee in the Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri. SLS client was a company that provided physicians to nursing homes and care centers across the country. The defendants were a physician formerly employed by SLS’s client and his new business associate. The physician left the employment of SLS’s client and immediately began to breach his non-compete. Additionally, the physician made false statements about SLS’s client to its long-time customers. After a 5 day trial, the jury returned a verdict in favor of SLS client and against the physician for $600,000 on the breach of contract claim and $500,000 on the slander claim.

Before trial, the Court had granted summary judgment in favor of SLS’s client against the defendant business partner. After trial, the court awarded SLS’s client $302,786 for abuse of process and $50,000 in its defamation claim. Total amount of the judgments SLS obtained for its client was $1,452,786.
